Located in Washoe County, Nevada, the Massacre Rim at the Dark Sky Sanctuary is a 1,200 foot tall escarpment that descends into Long Valley. In March of 2019, the International Dark Sky Sanctuary Association named Massacre Rim one of the darkest places on Earth. This location offers out of this world star-gazing as the area suffers little from light pollution.
Stars may not be the only thing you'll see if you're visiting the area - be aware there may be some ghosts, too! Rumor has it that there are stone markers that were wrongly interpreted as graves by emigrants on the Oregon Trail. These "graves" were really only used to guard unwanted supplies of travelers utilizing the trail during the early California gold rush. This could attribute to the ghost stories surrounding the location.
